Calcium is one of the most important elements in the diet because
it is a structural component of bones, teeth, and soft tissues and is essential
in many of the body's metabolic processes. It accounts for 1 to 2 percent of adult

level, calcium is used to regulate the permeability and electrical properties

When blood calcium

to the bones from calcium supplied through the diet. If an individual’s diet is
low in calcium, there may not be sufficient amounts of the element available in
the blood
to be returned to the bones … leading to a net loss in bone mass, a condition
called osteopenia. Osteopenia can lead to osteoporosis, or porous bone. Osteoporosis

than 80% of all Americans are calcium deficient.
Calcium deficiency symptoms include muscle aches and pains, muscle twitching and spasm, muscle cramps and reduced bone density. Vitamin D is essential for proper calcium absorption and utilization.
